The author thoroughly reviews several approaches to the problem of the trisection of an angle in Greek Antiquity, by using conic sections and other methods. He mentions works of Pappus (who refers to Nichomacus), and he points out a relation with a geometric problem posed by Euclid in Book I of the \textit{Elements}. The author then discusses the algebraic solution to this problem in the work of Viète.
