This expository paper is dedicated to Brian Davies on his 80th birthday and is devoted to one of the favorite topics of his research, namely, instability of the spectrum of an operator under tiny perturbation. These instability phenomena are illustrated by about ten examples involving Toeplitz-like operators and matrices, one of the favorite themes of the research of the author.
