For regular continued fractions, a number is eventually periodic if and only if it is a quadratic irrational. \textit{E. B. Burger} et al. [J. Number Theory 128, No. 1, 144--153 (2008; Zbl 1210.11078)] introduced \(N\)-continued fractions and showed for every quadratic irrational number \(x\) that there exist infinitely many positive integers \(N\) such that the \(N\)-continued fraction expansion of \(x\) is eventually periodic with period 1.\N\NIn the paper reviewed here, the authors continue their study of \((N,\alpha)\)-expansions which they previously introduced in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 454, No. 1, 106--126 (2017; Zbl 1366.65002)]. Now they show in certain intervals of the parameter space that rationals and some quadratic irrationals have no periodic expansion. There are no matching intervals for these parameters, while for regular continued fractions matching is often seen to hold for almost every parameter. It is also shown that if \(\alpha\) is sufficiently small or \(N=2\) then all rationals have an eventually periodic expansion with period 1.
