It is rather well known that none of the various generalizations of the core inverse of a matrix, that have been proposed so far, viz., the core-EP inverse, the DMP inverse and the GC inverse etc., is an inner inverse of the given matrix. Further, such generalizations of inverses do not exist for nilpotent matrices. The authors propose an extended notion of the core inverse for square complex matrices combining the sum and the difference of three known generalized inverses. This turns out to be a reflexive inverse and interestingly, equals the Moore-Penrose inverse, for nilpotent matrices. Various properties, representations of the extended core inverse, as well as the extended dual core inverse are investigated. Two applications are presented: some systems of linear equations and a minimization problem. A rather interesting aspect is that the new inverse can also be used to solve the normal equations corresponding to a linear system of equations.
