In this paper the authors construct several classes of two-weight and three-weight linear codes over \(\mathbb{F}_p\), \(p\) is odd prime, and determine their weight distributions. By puncturing the constructed codes the authors obtain some optimal linear codes with respect to the Singleton bound and the Griesmer bound. The codes are constructed by using the trace function with suitable choice of defining sets.
