This paper is the first of two parts of a review of the early development of set theory in the correspondence of Cantor and Dedekind (for Part II see [Zbl 1410.01015]. It begins with short biographies of the two protagonists and starts with the year 1873 when Cantor and Dedekind began to discuss the uncountability of the real numbers. The author does not add any new insights but has written a short, readable account of this early history. The paper is written in German.
