The Swiss scientist Jakob Hermann (1687--1733) worked also as a professor in Italy, Germany, and Russia. He studied problems in classical mechanics and was the first who proved Kepler's laws in terms of differentials (1710). The present author explains Hermann's considerations and shows how his ideas were rediscovered by later researchers.
