The paper considers a generalization of the classical theory of the stability of rigid body assemblages with dry joints based on the inclusion of slip-dependent dilatation in the contact mechanics of the interfaces. The friction angle \(\varphi\) is decomposed into two components, \(\rho\) and \(\beta\), where \(\rho\) stands for the dissipative component and \(\beta\) stands for the purely nondissipative geometric component caused by the inclination of the asperities. The effect of each of these components on the overall stability is analysed separately and in combination.
