The paper is the English translation of the Russian version of the author's survey [see Itogi Nauki i Tekhniki, Seriya Sovremennaya Matematika i Ee Prilozheniya. Tematicheskie Obzory, Vol. 17, Dinamicheskie Sistemy 2 (1994)]. From the paper: ``It is shown in the present work that when we solve a nonlinear ordinary differential equation, we can take the solutions of appropriately chosen linear equations as the ``initial data'' and consider the problem of finding the solution of the original equation that approaches (``stabilizes to''), in a certain sense, the given solution of the linear equation. In a number of cases, problems of this kind prove to be correct and contain classical boundary-value problems, the Cauchy problem, and poorly studied problems with initial data at infinity''.
