The author gives an elementary introduction into recent theories of polynomial knot invariants. In particular, the definitions of the Jones polynomial from the Kauffman bracket and of the HOMFLY polynomial from from the Ocneanu trace are discussed in some detail. The role of the HOMFLY polynomial as the universal linear skein invariant is emphasized. This paper can be recommended for use in seminars on knot theory.
