For constructing a structural systems theory the authors use a formal analog between sets of points and monoids, having on the one side oriented graphs (orgraphs) and categories on the other side. In this analogy, the role of mapping the orgraphs is carried by a functor, and the system in the structural form is the orgraph functor in a suitable category. The main problem in the structural theory of systems is a suitable definition of the main object of study, the abstract structure. Some interesting similarities lead the authors to consider the important connection between orgraphs, categories, and abstract structure schemes.
