The authors restrict the adjoint \(A'\) of a generator A of a strongly continuous semigroup on a Banach space \(X\) to certain closed subspaces E of \(F'\) and show, under appropriate conditions, that this restriction is a generator. The main part of the paper consists of applications to elliptic operators with boundary conditions.
