The authors construct the Kauffman bracket on Legendrian links in terms of their fronts. Its coefficients are invariants of finite type (in Vassiliev's sense). The corresponding weight systems are explicitly calculated. See also the authors' paper in Transl., II. Ser., Am. Math. Soc. 180, 25-43 (1997; Zbl 0886.57005) where a number of conjectures of this paper are proposed.
