Some engineering problems arising from hydraulics and the design of hydraulic structures are proposed, in accordance with the viewpoint of cybernetics, as the shape-control problems for a distributed parameter system, whose solutions are obtained using BEM-optimization technique. As a classical example, the problem of flow over a weir is converted first into a shape-control problem, which is then converted into an optimization problem to be solved. For this problem, the stream function, the free surface profile and the unknown flow-rate can be found simultaneously.
