As a result of local or global symmetry breaking, monopoles and cosmic strings can be formed in the early universe. When a black hole swallows a global monopole, the metric outside the black hole is modified. The precession of a gyroscope moving along a timelike circular orbit in the space-time having this modified metric is studied, generalizing some earlier results. It is shown that the precession frequency of the gyroscope increases when a black hole swallows a global monopole, and the amount of increase depends on the mass of the black hole and the scale of symmetry breaking.
