The subspaces of a finite \(n\)-dimensional vector space having a base consisting of vectors with at most \(k\) coordinates form a rank \(n\) geometric lattice, a higher-weight Dowling lattice \(L_ k\). The author characterizes modular elements in such lattices and uses that to factorize the characteristic polynomials of \(L_{n-1}\) and \(L_{n-2}\).
