The author characterizes quasi-metrizable spaces as those topological spaces whose topologies arise from a \(\sigma\)-self-cushioned pairwise whose dual is \(\sigma\)-self-cushioned. This result is closely related to an (unpublished) characterization of quasi-metrizable bitopological spaces given by \textit{Ralph Fox}. The problem of finding a purely topological characterization of quasi-metrizable spaces remains unsolved.
