Let \(\varphi\) be a congruence relation on an algebra \(A\). The concept of a \(\varphi\)-representation of \(A\) is introduced as a common generalization of direct and subdirect representation of \(A\). Irredundant \(\varphi\)-representations are characterized by means of congruence relations. The uniqueness of such representations is studied.
