The authors introduce the notion of (*)-serial coalgebras that is a generalisation of serial coalgebras. A coalgebra is said to be (*)-serial, if is both right and left (*)-serial, i.e. if its right (resp. left) injective indecomposable comodules are uniserial or biserial. In the paper properties of (*)-serial coalgebras and their comodules are investigated. One of the main results is Theorem 3.1 that gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a coalgebra to be (*)-serial. In Theorem 3.3 the authors describe properties of the right valued Gabriel quiver of a basic right (*)-serial coalgebra. Moreover some properties of comodules over (*)-serial coalgebras are investigated.
