The authors approximate the original four-dimensional Hodgkin-Huxley ODE-model by a two-dimensional model, where the membran potential and the potassium activation are the phase variables. The phase portrait of this system is mainly studied numerically in dependence on two parameters. In this way, the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation and the existence of canard cycles is detected.
