The authors show that the injective hull of a finite metric space can be explicitly constructed using modifications of combinatorial methods due to Buneman if and only if the metric simultaneously satisfies a 5- and a 6-point condition. The article is carefully motivated by applications of injective hulls to systematic taxonomy.
