The authors show that the four fundamental theta functions satisfy a nonlinear differential equation, involving also the quotient of the first and third theta functions. They use some results from the monograph of \textit{D. Mumford} [Tata lectures on theta. I (Progress in Mathematics 28, Boston: Birkhäuser) (1983; Zbl 0509.14049)], as well as a table on the transformations in various periods of the four theta functions.
