The authors consider hydrostatic equations used for example by ECMWF, introduce a vertical discretization, and investigate well posedness for the associated initial value problem. The discretization algorithm produces vertical structure matrices, and the proof of well-posedness reduces to verifying that they are oscillatory. This is done by applying a criterion of total positivity.
