The Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional isentropic viscous gas equations is considered in Lagrangian variables. The initial data are allowed to be discontinuous. The dependence of a solution on the small viscosity \(\varepsilon\) is studied under the assumption that the limit problem, with \(\varepsilon=0\), enjoys a single-shock solution, with the shock data obeying some restrictions. The passage to the limit, as \(\varepsilon\to 0\), is justified and the rate of convergence is found.
