The authors make a useful study of the unitary representations of the Virasoro group and the stabilizers for the associated coadjoint orbits. In particular, they examine closely the connection between works of \textit{G. Segal} [Comm. Math. Physics 80, 301--342 (1981; Zbl 0495.22017)], \textit{A. A. Kirillov} [Infinite dimensional Lie groups: their orbits, invariants and representations. The geometry of moments, Lect. Notes Math. 970, 101--123 (1982; Zbl 0498.22017)] and \textit{E. Witten} [Comm. Math. Phys. 114, 1--53 (1988; Zbl 0632.22015)].
