The author gives necessary and sufficient conditions for geometric \(C^ 1\) continuity \((GC^ 1)\) of two adjacent rectangular or triangular rational Bézier surface patches of the same degree. Some simple practical sufficient conditions are developed. The weights in the \(GC^ 1\) conditions can be used to control the shape of the patches and to compose a \(GC^ 1\) smooth surface easily.
