Summary: The dynamic non-shakedown problem for elastic-plastic nonlinear-hardening structures is dealt with. A necessary and a sufficient condition for shakedown not to occur (ratchetting or alternating plasticity) are proved. Thus earlier results are extended to internal-variable elastic- plastic models which allow for a general nonlinear hardening law.
