In the author's words: ``In the first (part), I shall try to evoke the long life of Hadamard and his involvement in the events of the time without saying much of his mathematical work.... In the second part, I intend to give an idea of the variety and richness of his mathematical production.'' He succeeds admirably. The latter part contains a baker's dozen (13) ``pearls and threads'' of his work on number theory, complex analysis, differential geometry and differential equations.
