The three balloons referred to in the title are three special multivalued complex functions: the logarithm, the Gauss hypergeometric functions, and the Picard hypergeometric function in two variables. The mathematical theories related to these functions occupy a substantial part of analysis, algebraic geometry, group theory and number theory. The author gives an interesting historical account as well as an introduction to some recent development connected with these theories.
