The author considers the Cauchy problem for a hyperbolic differential operator with variable multiplicity. The author gives some sufficient conditions for these problems to be well-posed. First the author studies quasi-homogeneous operators which commute with translation in the time direction and obtains a necessary condition for this operator to be well- posed. For a special type of operators it is shown that this condition is sufficient.
