On the basis of results by \textit{P. Linnell} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 47, 83-127 (1983; Zbl 0531.20002)] the author develops a proof that the Bass conjecture [see \textit{H. Bass}, Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 36, 1-26 (1979; Zbl 0425.20006)] is true for locally finite and residually finite groups.
