The problem of the laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid arising near various vertically erected heated bodies - plates, cylinders, and thin bodies of revolution - due to free convection has so far attracted the attention of a number of investigators. With the increase of interest recently in this current problem connected, in particular, with the use of solar energy it seems expedient to generalize this problem to non-Newtonian fluids and thus trace their behavior during the motion caused by free convection. Pursuing this goal, in the present paper we investigate the plane laminar flow in a boundary layer of an incompressible ``power'' non-Newtonian fluid arising near a heated vertical plate due to free convection with an arbitrary temperature distribution on its surface.
