Very strong Fitting pairs are most naturally defined in terms of their action on \(p\)-elements only. The need to give the action of such pairs on an arbitrary group element leads to much unnecessary complication. In this paper the concept of \(p\)Fitting pair is defined in order to formalize the process of defining a Fitting pair from its action on \(p\)-elements only. Use of this formalism leads to definitions which are much cleaner since it is no longer necessary to explicitly extend the action to an arbitrary group element. The use of this technique is demonstrated by defining the `transfer normal Fitting pairs' of Berger, amongst the most complicated in the area, by means of \(p\)Fitting pairs.
