It is shown that the differential invariants obtained by E. Cartan's method of equivalence may be used for determination of the symmetry group of second-order ordinary differential equations. As applications the Duffing, Holmes-Rand and van der Pol equations (models of nonlinear oscillators), the Thomas-Fermi equation (atomic physics), Emden's equation (astrophysics) and Kidder's equation (gas dynamics) are considered.
