In this article and a second article of the same title (to appear), the author discusses analogies between Baire category and Lebesgue measure in conjunction with analogies between Hausdorff measure (or dimension) and topological dimension. By establishing a more general viewpoint than the topological one, a large number of these analogies are unified. The present article also refers to analogies between mappings of sets (order isomorphisms versus homeomorphisms) and concludes with an illustration of what Banach might have viewed as an analogy between analogies.
