Let \(M^ g\) be the moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces of genus \(g\geq 2\). In this paper the authors give necessary and sufficient conditions for the singular locus of \(M^ g\) to contain points of dimension zero and points of dimension one; besides they give examples for Riemann surfaces representing those singular points.
