This paper discusses some issues raised by \textit{R. Routley}'s views about the foundations of logic [see Stud. Logica 39, 77-98 (1980)]. Rantala points out that modern abstract logic provides a framework for choosing a logic on the basis of intrinsic mathematical criteria. He argues against Routley's thesis that mathematics is intensional, and questions the meaning and the validity of the assumption of Routley's ultralogics about the inconsistency of the world.
