The starting point of the analysis is a result due to \textit{G. Mastroianni} and \textit{V. Totik} [J. Approx. Theory 110, No. 2, 180--199 (2001; Zbl 0981.41016)]. The aim of the paper is to extend this result to the case of weighted polynomial approximation on compact sets in the complex plane. The main results of the paper are contained in Theorem 1 and Theorem 2, where the extension to the complex plane is characterized.
