In this paper the author classifies additive groups of unital rings satisfying the minimum condition on principal ideals, thereby solving a problem of Szász, who asked when a ring with minimum condition on principal ideals could be embedded in a unital ring with the same condition. The main characterization is that R is such a ring if and only if R is a ring direct sum of a bounded torsion ideal and a divisible torsion-free ideal.
