The paper deals with the problem of characterizing the manifest probabilities of a latent trait model. The authors have introduced the item passing-odds curve (IPC) into considerations instead of the item characteristic curve (ICC) to obtain a useful expression for the manifest probabilities. Next, the Rasch model has been studied in detail and the \textit{P. W. Holland} model [ibid. 46, 79-92 (1981; Zbl 0461.62085)] has been compared with it for different numbers J of items in the test T.
