In this paper, the interpretations of both the column-oriented and the row-oriented algorithms of \(LDL^ t\) factorization are given in terms of structural analysis. Based on the interpretation, the sparsity of the matrix factors for a structural stiffness matrix is derived. Modifications of the matrix factors L and \(L^ t\) in structural reanalysis are examined. Such physical interpretation is important for the further development of efficient finite element solution methods.
