Given two Schwarzschild black holes and the initial condition that there exists a time-symmetric space-like hypersurface on which they are at rest, what is the minimum separation between them for which there exists a connected component of the apparent horizon enclosing both? The answer is found numerically for a wide range of different mass ratios and proves to have a simple asymptotic form, which is given, when one mass tends to zero.
