A. T. Brauer was born in 1894 and this paper appreciates his achievements as scholar as well as teacher. Some of his results in number theory and matrix theory (concerning power residues, diophantine equations, bounds for characteristic values) are discussed, his work as teacher is valued by three of his students. Lists of publications and of doctorial students complete the paper.
