The author gives two methods for simultaneously constructing the character tables of the symmetric groups \(S_{n-1}\), \(S_ n\) and \(S_{n+1}\) using the character table of \(S_{n-2}\) together with some formulae developed by him some 20 years ago. The formulae are rather intricate and it is difficult to see how they may be regarded as an improvement on other known methods for determining character tables of \(S_ n\).
