Many modern engineering theories use the operation of differentiation of nonlinear mappings. The purpose of this paper is to formulate the definition of the operation of differentiation of nonlinear mapping (functional). The applications of the generalized differentiation (Fréchet, Gateau) are given by five examples. Two examples are connected with the field of mechanics of solids, namely with the theory of nonlinear viscoelasticity and with the theory of the nonlinear non- local elasticity.
