The authors establish optimal maximum norm estimates for some finite element methods for the Dirichlet problem in a bounded domain. The methods are chosen to avoid imposing boundary conditions on the trial functions. These are the method of interpolated boundary conditions and two methods of Nitsche. The bulk of the paper is taken up with a series of lemmas relating the discrete and continuous Green's functions.
