The authors examine compressible isotropic elastic bodies subjected to finite pure homogeneous deformation. If an infinitesimal simple shear is superimposed on the deformation, necessary and sufficient conditions on the strain energy are obtained to produce a positive incremental shear modulus for all directions and planes of shear. The paper is based upon procedures outlined in earlier papers of the authors [e.g. ibid. 28, 1045-1057 (1977; Zbl 0317.73012) and 29, 245-251 (1978; Zbl 0399.73035)]. The results will probably be of greatest interest to theoreticians and elasticians.
