Necessary and sufficient conditions under which the mean demand of each pair of consumers satisfies the Slutsky conditions are derived for the case when the distribution of income is fixed. The necessary conditions are satisfied for income distributions only if the consumers have homothetic preferences. Some related more general problems are discussed as well.
