\textit{J. S. Wilson} [Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 71, 163-177 (1972; Zbl 0237.20044)] determined the subnormal structure of \(GL_ n\), \(n\geq 3\) over arbitrary commutative rings with 1. The author obtains analogous results about \(GL_ 2(R)\), R a local ring, with 2 invertible and \(| R/m|>3\), where m is the maximal ideal of R.
