The author presents a new (simpler) proof of a characterisation of m- dissipative operators in a real Banach space, due to him and \textit{K. Kobayashi} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci., Kyoto Univ. 12, 709-725 (1977; Zbl 0378.47035)]. It is based on \textit{J. Caristi's} fixed point theorem [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 215, 241-251 (1976; Zbl 0305.47029)] and follows an argument of \textit{W. O. Ray} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 75, 255-258 (1979; Zbl 0421.47029)].
